HiSteve
The most likley reason for this is that the spots are very fine deposits of plaque. This material is first deposited as a soft pastey cream coloured material from the food. Over time it sets hard to form calculus. Sometimes though in cats that chew well the calculus is only present as a very fine layer and bacterial action in this causes it to go black. Underneath, the tooth enamel will most likely be quite healthy. However if the materail is down at the gum margin the bacteria can invade below the gum and cause gingivitis and other problems.
It may be worthwhile having a dental clean done some time soon. Your vet will be able to assess how nececssary this is and use an ultrasonic tooth cleaner if necessary.
I hope I have been of assistance.
Kindest regards, Peter
