Hi,
I am so sorry your Hammy is having problems. If he has gotten dehydrated the urine would definately be dark colored and this may have affected the kidneys. What I would like you to do, is to put some Plain Pedialyte in the water bottle as well as trying to give some with an eye dropper. We want to get some fluids into him to flush the kidneys. Do not feed too heavily, as we do not want him to have a problem with food. You will want to start the hamster on some Bene Bac which is a Probiotic to help with the gut flora. These are first aid procedures and not a replacement for seeing a Vet. I would suggest that you see a Vet that specializes in Pocket Pets. They will be able to give you the proper treatments to help bring your little guy back to normal. Joan

I am Vet Tech. for 30+yrs. who works with all animals. I do alot of rescue work with small animals.
Thank you so much for your help. We will try the Pedialyte on Monday. The problem is compounded because I thought he went to hamster heaven and gave all of his stuff away. We are on the first floor and another teacher found him in the basement. We are giving him small pieces of lettuce and carrots and cheerios until Monday when he will get his regular food. It looks like he was eating a sponge on the floor downstairs. Thanks again and I hope your advice works for Louis (his name).
I sure hope the information helps Loius. I did notice you said he was two years old. That in hampster years is a senior citizen. you may want to go over the fact her is an older hamster and the life span is only between 2 1/2 years. If no problems a hamster may make it to 3 years old. I would suggest that if you can have Loius into the Small Animal Vet, itmay be a good idea to have him checked out hands on. Joan
