Question
Our hamster usually gets up late and runs in her wheel. But lately, our hamster has not gotten up in the middle of the night to run in the wheel. The cage seems to smell faster than normal too but I don't see any signs of diarea(spelling). She is eating and drinking normally it seems. Should I take the hamster in to the vet?

Hello,
If you see a noticeable difference in your hamster's activity level and a deviation from her normal routine, as you explained: not running in her wheel during the night, then, yes, a vet visit is required, to find the problem. I'm glad to hear that she's eating and drinking normally, but if the cage is beginning to smell faster than it used to, she may be urinating and/or defecating more often and/or her urine has a more pungent odor, due to a urinary tract infection. Also, her urine may be causing Aspergillis fungus to grow on the bedding, which is very dangerous to her health and can cause lethargy, among other illnesses.

Clean the cage more often, if it's smelling more quickly, to ensure that she has fresh bedding at all times and this fungus has no time to grow. Also, make sure that the bedding you're using is the most appropriate and safest, as some bedding is dangerous for hamsters. You can read more about types of bedding, here:

I hope you're able to bring your hamster to a vet who is experienced in treating 'exotics' or 'pocket pets', and she is feeling more energetic once she's been diagnosed and then, treated.

Thank you for the advice. I took our hamster to the vet last week. He looked over Butterscotch. Listened to his heart, weighed him, ect. Said that nothing looked out of the ordinary. Recommended that we changed his food, as he looked a little overweight. And to call him if there was any change. I am afraid that I am going to have to call him back. Just yesterday it looked like there was a liitle bit of soft poop in the corner of his cage and under the tail looks matted. I am fearful that he has wet tail . But I looked all thru the cage and didn't find any other soft poop. In fact I didn't find any poop at all. He got in his wheel and took about four or five steps and then stopped. He was also biting on his cage last night. What I have read about this ailment, it stated that hamsters almost always die of this infliction. Is it a very expensive treatment?

Hello again, XXXXXXXXXX, and thanks for your reply.
I'm glad to hear you took Butterscotch to the vet, and nothing serious was found.
If you did change his food, this may be the cause of the soft stool, but yes, it would be necessary to have him evaluated again, if wet tail is suspected. While this condition can be deadly, usually, if it's caught in time and treated properly, things should turn out alright. The most important thing with soft/loose stools, is your hamster can become seriously dehydrated within a short period of time, so it would be best to have Butterscotch seen by the vet, as soon as possible, for diagnosis and treatment.

I hope Butterscotch will be fine.
