Question

Engine Performance problem
2004 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 174000 miles

While cold the car accelerates and runs smoothly has no hesitation. Once it warms to operating temperature it then begins to hesitate at acceleration and runs high rpm's. This is not a consistent problem it doesn't happen all the time. Gas millage is around 17 miles to the gallon. I have already changed the spark plugs, coil packs, fuel filter, ran sea foam through the system as directed, and changed the throttle control sensor. Along with no codes being thrown so now I'm stabbing in the dark what can I do?

have you checked it over for any vaccum leaks?Do you have access to a scan tool to watch the engine data on it when this happens? Thanks Pete

no but looked for vac line leaks and this is a problem that only occures when car gets to opperating temp don't know if that has any relevance

i found a post on the net where an individual had some what the same problem and unpluged his egr valve to see if the hesitation would stop. i tried it and the hesitation did stop on acceleration. i haven't drove the car far enough to see if the gas mileage went up or not it looks as if it has improved. now is this the egr valve bad or is this just masking something else in the loop that is bad. also what would be the consequence for leaving it unpluged for a little while to see if this is the problem like gas mileage.

Answer

ok some of these vehicles had a reprogram in the engine computer for faulty egr operation,if your vehicle fits in this reprogram situation then a dealer would have to do this procedure. If you have emmissions testing in your state then leaving this egr valve unplugged would make it to where your vehicle wouldnt pass emissions testing.I would check with your local dealer to see if this reprogram applies to your vehicle.I hope this helped,Thanks Pete
