Hi there,

Welcome to Just answer !

Well, i think that although the combination of Strattera and abilify ( which is an antipsychotic , used mainly in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and depression with psychotic features , but can be used in ADHD , to assist strattera or psychostimulants) is a good one, but , you need to keep a watch on your son , as abilify being an antipsychotic can cause extrapyramidal side effects which include uncontrolled involuntary movements , restlessness, tremors , muscle stiffness etc, so i would suggest you to consult your doctor and discuss on this aspect and ask him to review the dose of abilify and place your son on such a dose , which is safe .

Other than this point , i believe the combintion of the two drugs is a good one ,and will work for your son.

I know your son has already tried Psychostimulants , which you mentioned did not work , but i would like to give you some names of very effective psychostimulants , just see , which one you have not tried for your son, and if there is a psychostimulant in the list which you have not tried as yet ,discuss its use for ADHD with your doctor, in your son's case. So, some good psychostimulants used in ADHD are--

1) Adderall XR ( amphetamine , amphetamine salts , extended release ) , better than plain adderall , as it is long acting, works throughout the day.

2) Ritalin( methylphenidate , fast onset of action , but short acting)

3) Concerta ( Long acting methylphenidate)

4) Focalin

5) Daytona patches ( applied over the skin)

6) Modafinil/ provigil

I wish your son all the best .

I hope my answer serves your query according to your satisfaction.

He has also had a long history of nervous tics when times are stressful and explosive night terrors which occur about 90 min after he falls asleep. Would Strattera cause either of these?

Answer

Well, yes kindly do try the psychostimulants , i am quite sure one of them will be effective in treating the ADHD symptoms .

As far as strattera is concerned , it does not cause or precipitate tics or night terrors, it is safe for use.

I hope this helps .

Take care..

Regards..
