Question

Pregannt Springer Spaniel at 5 weeks is discharging a gel which seems to be clear in color. Seems to be about a teaspoon this afternoon and evening. She seems to be feeling fine. Clear eyes, normal behavior. This is the first day we have noticed it.

All she is taking is her normal food and a NuVet Plus capsules which controls her excess shedding. In looking at the label it has viatmin A-1000 units, Vitamin E-50 units, Vitamin C-50 units as well as some minerals.

Can you please tell me if she is in some kind of distress or danger to her or the litter?

Thanks.

Hi Larry,

It's not recommended to give a pregnant dog any vitamin supplements during the first 4-5 weeks of pregnancy, so if the NuVet Plus contains vitamins A, E and C, you need to consult your vet, as an excess of vitamins A and D can cause birth defects.

However, any type of discharge during pregnancy is not normal, and may indicate an infection like pyometra (uterine infection), or other problem with the pregnancy, so it would be a good idea to have your dog evaluated by the vet, as soon as possible.

I hope all will be well with your dog and her litter.
