Question

I have big problem. My hamster looked fine just like usual, or probably just less mobile for a day when I found that it started sweating excessively under its throat, arm pits and finally the whole under belly. I can smell a little bit of acidic smell. I dunno how to describe that smell but it's definitely not urine. I can feel that he is a little hot. His skin looked reddish and he looked tired. He is very irritable. I have had him for a while and I never heard him make any sound. NEVER. Even when he was attacked with his playmates. I was amazed when I heard him squeeking today when touched. He ran around as if he's being attacked. He has started to stop eating and drinking. When I put him on the floor, he'll still walk. Yet, when I put him back to his cage, he just sit there doing nothing. He looked awful.

The past month, I have had another 2 hamsters died like that. 1 named Guai-2 died after kept drinking water for 12 hours. She was HOT HOT HOT. I could see light steam around the place she lied on. The other one, Yat Yat, had the same problem but less severe, he died as well. He just stopped drinking and eating. He died within 24 hours. Guai-2 died within 36. They live in separate cages. I don't mix my hamsters. So, it should not be cross contamination. They are all russXXX XXXXXXXX.

On the other hand, my winter whites never had this kind of problem. I thought they had heat stroke or something, I have tried keeping Guai 2 and Yat Yat in air conditioned room (after I saw them sweating of course) but they still died. Tried the vet. Didn't work!

Optional Information

Age: <1; Male; Breed: hamsters

Already Tried:
with my previous hamsters with the same problem:
I have tried taking them to the vet which gave them injections, medications, food supplement (grounded grass), etc. They just won't eat/drink. the last one drank continously but she sweat even more. she was wet wet wet (even on top coat), I tried to dry her with tissues gently. She got wet AGAIN within 10 minutes. I thought she had heat stroke so I brought her to sleep in my room where I had my aircon on, my room was not cold. It was just cool but definitely NOT COLD!

with BUBU (the one that is sick and still alive now) I gave him a little bit of honey, he won't eat it but he swallow a bit of it when i drip few drops of water on his mouth. I am just worried he'd die from hunger too.

I clean my hamster's cages all the time. They live in clean environment. OH! All 3 hamsters with wet belly symptomps are light bluish grey dwarf hamsters. What is wrong with them? I didn't change their diet or anything. I had the fan on last night on soft breeze when I saw him started sweating BUT HE STILL Sweat. T_T

Info Request

Hello,

This is a very unusual and complicated case. To be honest with you, I don't know if I can help, but I'll try. Some additional information will be useful.

What kind of litter/bedding do you use?

Do you have any air fresheners or scented candles in the house?

Do the hamsters live in plastic, wire, or glass homes?

Were all the sick hamsters related? If you don't know for sure, did they all come from the same store?

Thank you.

Answer

Hello again,

Because I'll be going offline soon, I want to give you a first aid measure for tonight. A hamster that is losing so much bodily fluid, regardless of what it is, is likely to become dehydrated. That in itself is life threatening. You can help prevent it by giving an electrolyte solution. I don't know where you live, and the types available are different in every country. In the UK, a product called Lectaid is available in pet stores. In the USA and some other countries, Pedialyte (available in pharmacies and discount stores, is what you'd want. If you can't find an electrolyte product, you can male your own. Here is a recipe:

Here's the recipe:

1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. table salt
1/2 tsp. potassium salt
3 tsp. sugar

Mix it all with 1 liter water.

The potassium salt is potassium chloride. It's sold in grocery stores as a salt substitute.

Use a syringe or dropper to put a few drops in the side of the hamster's mouth. For the first hour, give a few drops every ten minutes. After that, give it once every 10 minutes.

I'll check back for your replies in the morning, and we'll see what we can figure out.

i use pallets for bedding.

no i do not have air freshner or candles at home.

they live in wire homes with plastic base. they all live in separate cages. 1 hamster 1 cage.

no, they are not related.

the first 2 came from the same store. but bought at different time.

BUBU is not from the same store.

i find that my winter whites are a lot more healthier and stronger. even when they contract infections and so on they are more likely to make it. the only one that died, died from drug overdose ( the vet gave her injections but her body could not take it).

thx

Answer

Thank you for getting back to me. I'm sorry to hear your hamster isn't doing well. The Pocari Sweat drink could be used to supply electrolytes. However, I doubt that electrolytes will do anything except prolong the hamster's life a few hours. You take exceptionally good care of your hamsters, and have certainly done everything you possibly can for them. There is no common hamster disease that causes such symptoms.

Because you wanted to know what might cause this, I have been researching. I couldn't even find a rare disease that takes this course. When more than one animal dies of the same symptoms, there is generally one of three possibilities. One is a toxin. It doesn't appear that you have toxins in your home. A second possibility is a highly contagious disease. However, I found no diseases that produce these symptoms, so, unless your hamsters have contracted a new unknown disease, that doesn't seem likely.

The third possibility is that the hamsters have a genetic predisposition to this condition. Hamsters with coats of this blue color carry what is called a dilute gene. Two of those genes are necessary to produce the color. When an animal has two dilute genes, it is referred to as a double-dilute. It is found in many other animals, from gerbils, to rabbits, to dogs. It is almost always associated with health problems. In gerbils and hamsters, it has been linked to certain cancers, difficulties giving birth, and endocrine disorders. I suspect that, since all of the affected hamsters were of this dilute color, the illness you're seeing is genetic. Genetic diseases in dwarf hamsters have not been well-studied, so there is no way to know for sure. Such diseases are not likely to respond to treatment as you and your vet discovered. As I stated before, this is not a certainty, but the research I did leads me to suspect it is the most likely possibility.

I suggest that the next time you get a hamster, you choose a different color. Be sure to sterilize all cages and equipment, just in case there is a bacterial problem. If the disease doesn't appear in a different color, we're most likely looking at a problem associated with double-dilutes.

If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. I'm sorry for the loss of your hamsters. I hope your future hamsters will be healthy.

thank you Anna. you are such a good doctor. rarely do vets go into research to find out what is wrong with a small animal. yes. I find it quite surprising as well. my hamster died around 4pm today. I only found him acting strangely yesterday afternoon. It is weird how all the hamsters that died from this died within 24 hrs. they looked much in pain or agitated and screaming like crazy, running away from anything that might touch them. then they'd stop eating/drinking at night. ALL of those hamsters make the exact same sound. THE pitch they NEVER make usually. well at least they sound the same to me. which is weird because their voice is not usually like that. by 5-6am they'd not be able even to swallow water. they kept sweating and sweating and sweating. around 9a, they'll lose their voice. their pitch will sound as if it's stuck in their throat. around 11am, they'll become much less mobile. an hour later, they won't be able even to move and they'll go real soft almost like a dead body. they can't make any sounds by then. then it's matters of hours before they die. their breath would become so heavy. they will not be able to move their eye lids. their mouth stayed open. something more interesting is that I found that they gave out the EXACT same smell (to human nose). oh by night time, they'd already stopped poo-ing and pee-ing which is very uncommon for hamsters. they poo everywhere, all the time.

talking about toxin. do they make hamsters sweat? toxin kills within minutes. right?

my friend's hamsters contacted Dettol and it died within minutes. thank you so much for your attention. u are great.

Answer

First, I'm sorry for the loss of your hamster. It must be hard on you to lose so many pets in such an awful way.

Next, I do want to clarify that I'm not a vet. I'm a biologist who happens to love animals. I always want to research anything I don't know about. I wish I could have found something definite for you, but there just doesn't seem to be anything certain.

Toxins can cause problems in many different ways. Some kill quickly, like the Dettol did. Others build up slowly and gradually cause illness. Most sources state that hamsters do not sweat, so no, that wouldn't be a sign of poisoning. Whatever the liquid is that is coming from your hamsters is peculiar to this illness.

I wish you better luck with your future hamsters.

thank you Anna.

yea. I researched and a lot of sources said that hamsters do not sweat too.

they give out this funny smell. I know straight away that Bu Bu went through what Guai 2, and Yat Yat went through as soon as I smell him. it's kinda devastating to watch him die like that. I looked more like some organ failure.

Though I doubt you'd know more, do you know any disease that can kill a hamster within hours? i dunno what happened. my hamsters started dying since january. I have lost a lot. Cus Cus died 3 days after mating. he looked so tired and refused to eat and drink. i dunno what went wrong. Some people think I am crazy for bringing hamsters to see the vets. The vet cost like 20 times more expensive than the cost of a hamster. anyway, thanks a lot for ur help

Accepted Answer

I don't think you're crazy for going to the vet - you're just a great pet owner.

Any disease that results in dehydration can cause death in a few hours. Once dehydration occurs, hamsters can't live very long.

You're welcome for the help.
