Question

I have a 2003 BMW Z4 that seems to have an intermittent steering problem when the outside air temperature exceeds 80-85 degrees F. The steering sticks and the wheel does not return to the center (straight) position when released. An example would be if I am on the freeway going through a gradual turn, the proper response for the steering would be to go straight if I took my hands off of the wheel but this vehicle will continue around the turn with no hands on the wheel. Is this a problem with the electric assist and what can be done to remedy the problem. Thank you.

Optional Information

2003 BMW Z4 3.0

Already Tried:
26,500 miles. Local BMW dealer took it out and said he did not feel the problem. There are quite a few posts on the web if you google Z4 steering problem so I at least know I am not crazy. The web comments also state that BMW has NOT acknowledged the problem...........it is a safety issue.

Hi

I have tested a few Z4 models for this issue and always found when a customer complains of steering issues and also refers too temp as a factor that the EPS unit(Electric power steering) has to be replaced. After replacing these units i have always had positive feed back from customers. The EPS unit is a all in one unit and the only way to rule it out is to replace it i would ask your local dealer to submit a goodwill claim for this item due to the low mileage covered by the car.
