Question

i have a '99 s-10 2wd truck the fuel pump has been replaced 3 times. everytime i put a new one in it goes for about 100 miles then the service engine light comes on and it dies. the fuel pump is always burnt up. i've had the ground wire, fuel filter, and return line all replaced. everyone i talk to says there's something wrong with the fuel pumps. i'm just wondering what i should do or who i should take it to, to be looked at. also, could there be something wrong with the computer?? Thank You, Nikki

3 bad fuel pumps? I doubt it. If you said every 30,000 miles, maybe. Somone is missing something on their diagnosis. Their fixing the effect, not the cause. GM vehicles had a problem with the fuel pump connectors burning, causing a bad connectio. That's one possibility. What I would do is check your fuel pump with an oscilloscope, which gives me a look at the electrical side of the pump. I would check the amperage draw of the pump, to see if there is a mechanical issue, or an electrical issue. That to me is the only true way to diagnose this problem. A computer problem would not cause this. This is simple physics. A voltage is fed to an electrical motor, which is grounded, and when spinning, moves gas through it and forces it into the outlet of the pump, and into the fuel line. As the the fuel line is full, the motor has to work harder to try to push the gas, making the amperage draw increase. At a certain fuel pressure, a regulator opens, and returns excess fuel to the tank. If the pump is in fact "burned up", something electrical is happening. You need to find a good mechanic with vast electrical knowledge. If you go to the website iatn.net, I believe they have a locater that can direct you to the nearest member.
