Question

Our retreiver Charliemax is 5 years old and caught Kennel Cough. He has been left with Bronchitis and an Xray showed some sort of shadow on one of his lungs. He has recently been precribed anti-biotics for a runny nose which seemed to also help his respiratory problems.
Our vet wants him to go for an MRA scan at Newmarket some 120miles away which in itselt willl cause him distress but we feel a stonger anti-biotic may clear it up. We have a hospital near us called Dovecote which advertises MRI scans and wondered why we haven't been referred there.
Money is not the issue as we are insured but we only want to do the right thing.

If you can help we would be very grateful.

Answer

I'd ask your vet directly about the more local clinic with the scan equipment. It may be just they have never dealt with that group and trust the other one. They may feel the equipment or its operator is not as good (though they may not say it quite that way). But you should aks them.

I'd suggest also asking about a nebulizer treatment to get antibiotics deeper into the lungs to see if that can clear the 'shadow' if it could be pneumonia.

You can read about pneumonia here and it goes over nebulizer use

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_pneumonia_management.html

What the nebulizer does is break the antibiotic into a mist the dog inhales so the meds go right into the lungs where the infection is.

Now it may be your vet feels the shadows might be a tumor and getting a good picture image with the MRI may tell you if it is operable or not.

Hope this helps you!

Dovecote advertises MRI scans to investigate Bronchitis and we know a friend that was referred to the same hospital for an MRI scan for another issue from our vets.

Charliemax is not coughing but is panting some of the time but still running around and playing. A tumor has never been suggested or considered.

Thanks

Then I'd ask your vet directly about using the closer location to reduce stress on you and your dog.

However it may be their reason is they feel the other place does a better job. As I'm sure you know from all aspects of life what is advertised vs what you get can be different.

But it may be the Newmarket location does a 'consideration' back to the clinic and your local one does not. No way to tell and all you can do is ask for a more local referral.

That is good news that no tumors are a worry!
