Question
Hello. I am 48 years of age and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard. I have a 100% service-connected disability of(rheumatoid arthritis). I receive my pension through the Veterans Administration and have been told throughout the years that one of the many benefits offered to us is that when I purchase a home, moduler home or piece of property to have a home put onto, is that, as long as this is my primary residence, that I will be exempt from paying California property taxes. Is this true? Where can I find this in writing (print)? Any help that you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time! Sincerely E.P. Drew (U.S.C.G. Retired) XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Hello XXXXX,
It is not correct that you would necessarily be totally exempt from property taxes, although you would qualify for an exemption.
Current law provides for Property tax exemptions on the assessed value of a home of:
a) Up to $111,296 if the total household income from all sources is over $49,979 per year.
b) Up to $166,944 if the total household income from all sources is under $49,979 per year.
Please refer to the following publication from the California Department of Veterans Affairs -- last section titled Property Tax Exemptions.
