Hi,

It's possible that the leg may be broken also if the bird is still not-weight bearing well. Your vet will be able to tell you this at the exam.

If the metacam was prescribed for the budgie, I would go ahead and continue to give. Yes, kidney problems can develop but this is not that common. The bird is obviously in distress and needs to still be treated.   If he seem weak, place food and water right by where he is so he doesn't have to move around much. You may want to remove or lower perches if he is having trouble perching.

I would not apply anything else to the leg as those topical products can be very greasy on the feathers and this can cause the bird to pick at these feathers or affect the ability of the bird to control body temperature.   Do not use any more lidocaine/benzocaine etc. as they can be potentially toxin in birds.

I would definitely call your vet first thing in the AM and get him in. If he worsens tonight, you may have to check with a local veterinary emergency clinic.

I hope he gets better soon. It sounds like you saved his life.... If you need anything else, please let me know.

Hi Dr G

Your helpful answer last night gave Hermes the budgie a good night, able to sustain an hour long journey to to local vet hosp.there they have examined injury, continued the Baytril and Metacam and if swelling and reluctance to weight bear persist, will x ray and proceed accordingly.

Hermes has enjoyed his day, is perching better and has less swelling. We do not think he has a fracture as is grasping pretty well.Am very grateful for your timely advice.I appreciate how difficult it must be,not knowing patient or owner.
