Question

Yesterday my Lady Goldian finch was attack by my budgie (parakket). I found my sweet finch bleeding in her leg. Today the leg is suoling she can stand up on both of her legs, but his weight is obviouly a bit more on her good leg side. She is eating ok but she keeps touching her bad leg. yesterday we did apply neosporing thinking that she could get infection, but we know we did that wrong. What can we do to help her to take out her disconfort and pain? Is there something that can help with her inflamation? We know her leg is not broken.

Dear XXXXXX:

Thank-you for your question. I am sorry to hear about your finch's problem.

To start, could you please (if you haven't already) put her in a seperate cage from the budgie. Crank the room temperature up to 80 degrees F (27 C), and increase the humidity; these things shold help her a lot. Make sure that her food and water are close so she doesn't need to move much to get them.

It was good to NOT use neosporin again: the ingredients will not help her, and because it is an oil-based ointment it could actually make her feel worse by messing up her feathers and interfering with temperature regulation.

She needs to see a vet, whether ithe leg is broken or not, because the way she is acting says that she is in pain. Here is a link to help you find one: www.aav.org/vet-lookup. A vet can prescribe pain medication and antibiotics for infection.

I wish you the best; my Goulies lived until they were in their twenties!
