Question

I received a car in exchange for $$ owed to me from my previous employer. The co went bankrupt and had me fill out a Bill of Sale giving me possession of his car. I was told I would receive the Title but he took off. I went to the DMV - filed out for a lost title... then found out there was a LIEN on the car. Well, I paid the tax of almost $4,000 - based on what the car was worth. Then, I finally got the Title from the dealership AFTER I paid the lien/ final balance of $1500 dollars and received an UNSIGNED TITLE.                                    &nb sp;                                         $5500 dollars later, I have my signed BILL OF SALE from almost a year ago. I also have the UNSIGNED TITLE for the car.   Since I will never be able to locate the original owner - who took off on a lot of people he owed $$$, -- WILL I BE ABLE TO REGISTER THIS VEHICLE IN MY NAME?

Optional Information

Los Angeles, California

Already Tried:
I just received the Title.
Last thing I did was - I went to the DMV and wanted to apply for a lost title. I paid all taxes -but since there was a lien I could not apply for lost title.

I then went to the dealer, paid the last car payment - and received an unsigned title.

Really, the question is since it is unsigned, can I get the title in my name?
One last note. I have had the car in my possession since 2006. And I signed the Bill of Sale on Oct. of 2007.

Answer

You can talk to the Bankruptcy trustee and see what you can work out. He may claim the car or he may sign it over to you. I can't answer that question.
