Butler County Ohio will start charging sex offenders 25 dollars to register is this legal ? Are they not singling out one of many crimes to balance their budget ?

Just found out about this today.Ohio past new law about sex offenders and changed everones clasification and county wants sex offenders to foot the bill.The new law is in legal fight in front of suprem court and have not been presented to court and everything is in limbo. County is singling sex offenders out.

Accepted Answer

No other criminals have to register within the community where they reside - only sex offenders. So, no, they are not being discriminatory without a rational basis therefore because of the additional costs associated with tracking where the sex offenders are residing and making sure they are in compiance with the residency requirements - ie. can't be within certain distance of schools, etc.
