Question

Just had major surgery on my BMW e46 2002 car overhead gasket, picked it up and it does not start as quickly as it used to but does start first turn of the key and hold it in place and it eventually starts, have been told the car has a learning ECU and it will get quicker, looking for a second opinion. Started fine prior to this work and there is also a ticking sound told it is a tappet and the sound will go away after running. Also told to take it back at 500 miles so they can check it over

Answer

Greetings XXX XXXXX,

Your vehicle does have a "learning" ECU as you call it (technical term is adaptive strategy)and it is reset to basic setting when battery is disconnected for extended periods...It is possible that it could give you a longer than usual crank until it relearns, but I would watch it closely to be sure thats it...could be a fuel system rest pressure problem...as far as the ticking noise, the noise should go away immediately after a road test at normal operating speeds...once oil pressure is brought to max all noises should be eliminated...it is common for hydraulic buckets(lifters)to bleed out after sitting , but they pump right back up after a test drive...I advise drive the car 50-100 miles and if you still have issues, bring car back immediately...this is more than enough mileage to eliminate your concerns...jeffrey590

the 50 - 100 miles do you mean constant i.e in the one go or can this be an accumulation and how long would you expect the longer than usual crank to persist? i.e ecu to relearn

Accepted Answer

mileage can be accumulated, not all in one drive...I would expect relearn to take approx 50 miles, but give it an extra 50 just to be sure...by 100 miles car should be as it was prior...jeffrey590
