Question

I found her in my apartment hallway a couple of days ago, and her mouth is kind of dropped open, and she has saliva on her chin. She has been drinking a lot of water, and she has been eating also. She also urinated on herself. Can you tell me what is wrong with her, and what should i do? I dont think i can afford to take her to a vet.

Hello:

I have some questions for you:

  1. Is this your cat or a stray?
  2. Any other pets in the household?
  3. Has your apartment been sprayed for insects recently?

Awaiting your reply.

Actually my sister had found her when she was just a kitten, and then she gave her to me, we used to have another cat a male, but thats was many months ago, but she was a stray, and i have not taken her to get any shots yet, but this problem just started 2 days ago, and she has been a house cat for months now, and no my apartment has not been sprayed recently. Also i just noticed that she has these two bumps on both sides of her mouth, i dont know if she is supposed to have them or not, but one looks a little more swollen than the other.

Does she normally go outside?

Is she eating and drinking normally?

No she does not go outside at all, we have a balcony in my apartment, and when I open the door, she does not even go out, she just sits in front of the door, she is afraid to go out.

And yes she is eating normally, she is able to eat both solid and soft cat food, but it seems like she is drinking a lot more water than usual.

Also she seems to be getting better, her mouth closes sometimes, and there is not as much saliva anymore, but she is still keeping it open from time to time and there is still a small amount of saliva.

Answer

She could be salivating due to toxin exposure, kidney disease, dental disease, pain, or pancreatitis.

I understand that money is tight, but I recommend getting her into your veterinarian for bloodwork to check her kidneys. If she is in kidney failure this could be life threatening.

Some clinics will take payment plans, but you may have to call around to see who will work with you.
