I have a '93 Mercury Tracer that won't start sometimes. The engine turns over, but no dashboard lights come on when you turn the switch when it happens. I have learned that if you change the gears from first to reverse (it is a manual transmission), that helps. When it does start, then I can put it in reverse sometimes and it shuts off. Any ideas? Neutral Safety Switch? I can tell when it's going to start because the dashboard lights come on, otherwise I don't even bother to turn over the engine. Maybe a bad ignition switch?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch, just verify first that the battery has a full charge and not drained or a bad cell, that can also cause the same type of concern, try wiggling the ignition key and see if the lights come on. An inspection of the ignition switch electrical connector on the steering column should be done to make sure there is no signs of overheating
