With proper prep work the marble can be painted quite satisfactorily. First remove any sealer or finish that may be on the marble. You can do this with a commercial product sold for this purpose or a basic product like turpentine or mineral spirits. Next step is to sort of "roughen" the surface to a slight degree. Use a medium grit sand paper and scuff up the marble surface. For painting I suggest a primer and then an oil base paint. Apply a first coat fairly thin and then a normal finish coat.
