Optional Information

Age: <1; Male; Breed: black --?

Already Tried:
I"m trying cranberry (super) in capsule form,I open it and mix with food...he will eat a bit of can cat food, he has dry kibble, also I boiled some chicken livers, and give him small amount, he only eats a few bites at a time, and he usually has an excellent appetite, and he used to "talk" all the time, but a few weeks ago, he sound raspy and coughing and sneezing, but he doesn't do that now, but I thin I can detect a small "rattle" every once in a while...Isn't this so difficult, I can tell you his tongue is proper color, not black.

Info Request

Hello. Thanks for writing in? Do you notice any change in his urination habit (i.e, going more often or straining)? Have you noticed any sneezing or discharge from the nose or eyes? Is he up to date on his vaccines?

Yes,TC is current on all shots...as far as his urinating habits, they seem to be pretty much the same, maybe 2 times a day,as I have no idea what color it should be, I left out the litter, and he just urinates in the box,and its the color of coffee, only where coffee is more brown his is more reddish gold color..

Several weeks ago,he sneezed some and had a raspy sound when breathing, and then started losing weight, not eating much, and is not the least interested in going out-doors,he may go out on the porch but wants to come back in, he had been staying out-side the entire day... there was a gray cat out in the barn but he hasn't been around lately either...and TC has been spayed...his eyes are OK,no discharge..Is it normal for a (secondary)white ?to cover their eye-ball when awaking,I never noticed this before, and I can't call it a film, but it is part of the cat, could that be a symtom of something? I had a cat here b-4 TC,and he died, but his tongue turned black, lost weight, the vet gave him a shot and anti-biotic and he started coming back around, then just laid down and died..I am hoping this isn't going to be the same fate for TC.

Answer

Thanks for the information. I am definitely concerned about the color of his urination. It may just be a urinary tract infection or other inflammatory lower urinary tract disease, but it could be a more serious problem with the kidneys. My biggest concern is that this the color change in the urine could be due to increased levels of hemoglobin (from severe anemia) or myoglobulin (from something that caused severe muscle or organ trauma) in the urine. This can be caused by an immune mediated disease (body reacts against itself) or a parasitic disease (Hemobartonella). The breathing problem might have been an upper respiratory infection and is completely unrelated to what is going on it. The white film you see over the eyes is probably protrustion of the third eyelid. This usually happens when cats are sick or when there is a neurologic problem. I would get him into your vet tomorrow to run some bloodwork and urinalysis. The sooner that a problem is noted, the more than likely they will be able to do something about it. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

I am sorry. I meant to say that the upper respiratory problems may be unrelated to what is going on here, not that it is completely unrelated. It may be.

OK,I remember that I saw TC favoring his back right leg just before all this started.and I don;t know what happened.I wonder if that could be related. And could you tell me what would be a normal color for his urine? I will see about a Vet in the AM...Thanks for taking time to talk with me....I just hate it that the cat is sick.------------ Harley

It is difficult to if the lameness is related or not. It could be a bite/fight wound or another puncture wound, especially if he roams outside. Severe muscle trauma or a nasty abscess may be able to cause this. Normally, a cats urine is yellow to a dark yellow color. The brown or red color urine is definitely a concern here. Please let me know if I can be of any other help.Texas Veterinarian39924.0643071759
