I inherited some land in this county, and recently was asked if I wan yed yo sell it. When I carried the offer to my attorney to see what he thouight of the offer, he informed me that I probably no longer owned it. For the past 15 or 20 years, I have received tax notices and have been paying every year. Do I own the property or have I lost it through adverse possession. If I have lost it, why was I not notified, and why am I billed each year for taxes due?

Already Tried:
Talked with the Tax Assessor who saya the property is in my name.I inherited this land through a will. It passed to her from a relative who allowed a neighbor to let some cattle graze there for a period of time. After that man passed, it appears that his heirs claimed and perhaps sold land that could have included the land that was willed to me. Evidently no one is paying taxes on the lots but me. I have been paying the taxes since 1990.
I have heard nothing about adverse possession for non use,
but if there is such a law, why was I not notified, and How can I get my money back if I indeed have lost the property?

Answer

What you need to do is to go to the property and see what is actually happening and eject anyone that is currently on the property. Post no tresspassing signs around the property line with your name and phone number on them and take pictures. Once you take back the property it will belong to you unless someone files suit claiming adverse possession.
