Question

For the 2nd time... I have worn a Duragesic patch for about 8 years. This past year, I have noticed that about 8 hours after I put on a new patch, my face, my cheeks get beat red and are quite painful. I figure this to be a reaction to the Duragesic patch. I want to know if this pattern of itching is seen often in rheumatoid arthritis. Please comment. What can I do to diminish the symptoms and to continue wearing the patch. Are there are types of skin patches for pain that do not make people itch? Please advise. Thank you.

Answer

Greetings.

This is very likely to be development of allergic reaction to the Duragesic patch. I am afraid, the only treatment is to stop them and stop alternate analgesic patch. The reaction to Duragesic patch does not point to rheumatoid arthritis. There are some anti-inflammatory analgesic patch available (like indomethacin), which you can use with the advice of your physician.
