Question

I am a 50 year old male who is rarely sick and do not have a family doctor.I had two uncles(maternal side) to die of abdomenal cancer 23 and 32 years ago.One was 52 and the other was 47.I don't know which organs were affected, just that nothing could be done after exploratory surgery, and they died soon after.I recently had a colonoscopy and no problems were found.I read that at my age the prostate should also be screened for cancer. What type of doctor do I need to go to for this, and are there any other tests or screenings that I should have done?

Answer

Hello,
After the age of fifty yes there is increase of chances of most of the diseases specially in a person who has positive risk factors. With your positive family history of cancer in the abdomen i do think you should go for frequent check up by colnoscopy(every 2 year),ultrasonography whole abdomen & a routine blood examination including your liver fi=unction tests & kidney function tests to detect an early development of any disease.
For the prostate you should have an routine estimation of PSA which will be helpful.
For this you should go to your general physician who may perform a routine clinical examination on you & if find any problematic then may refer to a surgeon or gastroenterologist whenever required.
Hope this will help you.
Regards.

Do you only suggest a psa test for the prostate. Many reports I have read suggest that isn't enough.A dre is essential according to those reports. What are your thoughts on this?

Accepted Answer

A DRE & PSA both are helpful in detecting the prostate problem & both have pitfalls. But a DRE should be done when elevated PSA indicates towards the suspected prostate cancer.DRE is less effective in detecting prostate cancer then the PSA.You may have a good article on this at following link-

Hope this will be helpful.
