Question
Looking at a 2006 Range Rover HSE. Know previous owner and in immaculate condition. But what are some expenses I should be aware of before buying? How much does a standard service usually run? Am I going to be surprised with something that will cost an arm and a leg? I've just heard maintenance and ownership costs are very high on Range Rovers.

Answer
Hi Springsteenfan,
My name is Rich and I am currently a certified Land Rover tech and have been with them since 1999. What I can tell you about the Range Rover is what the trouble areas are that we see at the dealership. We see quite a few radiators leaking in the full size range rovers. There are also a few other coolant leak areas such as a coolant hose on top of the engine and the coolant bottles. The other possible major expense wound be the differentials. We have problems with the 2006 to 2007 years mostly in the sport models not so much on the full size models. What has happened is the paint on the inside of the housings comes loose and mixes with the oil and causes bearing damage. Now bear in mind I am a tech and all I see is the broken ones. The scheduled oil changes are at 7500 miles. If you plan to keep the vehicle for a while I do recommend cutting the schedule in half. It may sound bad on the surface but like I said I just see the broken ones. Brakes for a non supercharged are done about every 25 to 35000 miles and normally the pads and rotors are changed which cost around 1200 dollars parts and labor. The supercharged go through brakes allot faster and can be expected to be done as early as 18000 miles to 25000 miles on the high side. The cost is around the same. These problems I have noted start to happen around the 40000 mile mark. Aside from what I have mentioned the rest of the vehicle has few problems. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Best Regards,
Rich

Hey Rich,
Thank you so much for your response. It was very helpful. One last question is, when you see radiator leaks and coolant leaks, is that usually quite pricey to get repaired? Thanks a bunch.

Hi Springsteenfan,

The radiator would be the most costly of the leaks, the cost of a radiator if I remember correctly is around 600.00 for the radiator and 2 hours of labor time to replace. The cost of the bottle is around 70.00 as well as the small hose that has been known to leak. So like I said, the radiator would be the most costly part. I`m happy that I was able to assist you in making an informed decision on your purchace. One thing I would recommend is to purchace an extended warranty for this truck to minumize your repair costs, but check with serveral companies and read what is covered and what is not covered when shopping for a policy like this. If I can be of further assistance please let me know. Please leave feedback and thank you for using JA.

Best Regards,

Rich
