Question

Do I have to file? My income is child support and a private disability policy as well as SS disability for myself (and my children get benefits because of me). As far as I have been told, none of that income is taxable. Is there an incentive that this year that would necessitate me filing the paperwork? And yes, I'm aware that today is April 15th and that I'm an idiot for waiting.

Optional Information

Montgomery, Alabama

Already Tried:
Last year, I filed for the incentive but I mistakenly put myself as head of household instead of single and I think this is why I only go the incentive of $300 for my one allowable deduction. I didn't get the other $600 but have not been able to get an amended tax report submitted and now I think it is too late. But that was my next question.

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX,

If all your income is from non taxable sources and you are not required to file a tax return you still may want to file.

Most taxpayers who received the economic stimulus payment last year will not qualify for the recovery rebate credit on their 2008 federal income tax return. However, some individuals who did not get the economic stimulus payment, and a smaller number of those who did, may be eligible for the recovery rebate credit. If you didn't get an economic stimulus payment in 2008, you may be eligible to receive the recovery rebate credit in 2009.

So, if you did not file for the stimulus by filing a 2007 return you may wish to file a 2008 return to claim the rebate.

I hope this information is helpful,

Thank you for that answer. I have begun to fill out the turbo tax online application but I don't see a place where I could put the information I just told to you so that they would know to see if I qualified for the credit for THIS year. I feel like apologizing a thousand times for my delay in even asking these questions, but anyway, my real question is:

Do you think I need to get a professional to help me fill out my form this year or is it something that if I put down my straightforward income (which would be just about zero) and then my dependents (my son), then that would be enough for them to know whether or not I qualify and whether or not I received one last year?

Answer

Hi,

You can enter the info yourself.

I don't know if you have ever heard of TaxSlayer.com but their software is very user friendly.

After you enter your basic info, name address, they ask about the stimulus. I think I might be after deendents entered but anyway it's simple.

TurboTax is pretty simple too. Go to their help section (over to the right) then click on the help for Frequently Asked Questions. It's in the middle on the right.

This will help with navigation and taxquestions. Just do not ask for a professional unless you want to pay for expert help.

I am so sorry because I thought that I had accepted these replies already but I guess I didn't follow up with my account to see if anything was deducted! I received an acceptance request several times and was thinking that I was duplicating my fee. At any rate, ha ha, I mean in any event, I was pleased with your answer and will accept your replies. In fact, I did go to the sites for help as you recommended and they were very straightforward and right to my area of query.

Thanks again for the advice!
