Question

My sister and I don't know how to help my mother. She's 42, shes had a terrible childhood, our father has gone overseas for a trip, she hates everything including herself n life. She's cried everyday since his gone, though she doesn't "love" him, they've been married for 22 yrs. She lost her father in 2001, her estranged mother last yr. She's deeply depressed, addicted to the pokies, smokes tones of cigarettes knowing she has emphasymia, doesn't have emotions towards anything - specially life. She has no escape as she says; the police took her license away for 2 yrs, she can't work because of her conidtion, she stresses over everything, she hasn't put on weight since she gave birth to my sisters; shes skinny as hell approx 44 kgs. she doesn't do drugs or drink. Every time we talk it ends up about her n her life/up bringing, her depression. she is never satisfied nor does she make an effort. She not only is negative bout every single thing in this world, its bringing us down... Help?

Hi lil dani07,

It sounds as if your mother has depression. You may need to have a family intervention to get her to see a Psychiatrist for medications.

You may need to gather a few family members that see what you see and sit her down and have them tell their stories of how sad she is and how she would benefit from help.

Have a psychiatrist appointment lined up, tell her about it then and insist she go get, at the very least, an evaluation.
