Question

my whirlpool refrigerator/freezer has stop freezing stuff in the freezer and is no longer cooling in the fridge. the motor is still running and it feels cool but not cold enough. i took the back of the fridge of and took a blower and cleaned out all the lint and dust underneath and on the coils. also a friend of mine said to take a screw driver and turn the reset button off and back on, and he thought it might kick it back on. but no cooling is happening. i also removed the cover in the freezer on the back wall and noticed that there was ice on the coils.. so i took a blow dryer and melted it off and as soon as i plugged it back in it froze again. is this supposed to happen. all the fans are working properly. could you tell me if i should stop wasting my time and just go and buy a new one, or this salvagable.

we need to pull the inside back panel off inside the freezer and check the coil to see how much frost is on it ,,, do this and shout back at me

Larry there is frost all along the pipe that run vertically and where is bends to the left and goes past the little fan and i think is is a red thermostat there to, and the frost goes all the way back into the whole in the back wall where the other pipe is coming from the same whole. this pipe does not have frost on it. but the one to its right does.

Info Request

is the coil itself covered or can you see most of the silver coil

224 days and 10 hours ago.

Larry the coil itself is not covered only the tube or aluminum pipe that runs vertically. all the coil is clean. also i went back to check on the fridge and the fan stopped and the ice is now melting. I think i read somewhere that the fridge turns the fan off so the coil won't freeze. but i guess you are the expert bud. i am just getting ahead of myself. sorry about that.

Answer

ok ,,, well i hate to tell you but you have a sealed system problem ,,,,,, its eather a freon leak or a bad compressor ,,,, you will need a cfc tech like myself to see which it is but eather will be high price to fix .... if the leak can be found and fixed it will cost upper $400 and if its in the liner then it cant be fixed and if its the compressor your looking at $500 to $700 ...... my advice would be to check prices on a new fridge ,,,, thats alot of money to put out on a older unit / hope i didnt tick you off but that is my opinion / larry
