Question

My boyfriend is a mechanic, he believes that I have a cracked cylinder leak. I have a 2000 Ford explorer xls... V6 4 cylinder drivers side. He says that the anti freeze is leaking into the cylinder causing burning antifreeze ( I have to keep a jug of water and/or Synthetic mixture antifreeze to top it off. Any way once this happens the check engine light comes on, (did something like this not too long ago)and he says it's the same cylinder that then causes the engine to skip and do other things. He scanned the truck put in the codes did a couple of other things and the Skipping goes away and truck drives smoothly. How can you be so sure that it's the cylinder without actually without doing a dye test or pull of the head gasket, get to the cylinder. I'm out of work have no money he wants to go to to a couple of trust worthy Recked car lots (junk yards) and get the part he needs I'm assumming the cylinder head, get the cost and replace it. I'm out of work. What do you think of K&Wsealant

Cracked cylinder heads is not uncommon. I would be leading towards just a blown head gasket. But once the head is off, it would be best to have the head checked for cracks and for flatness. Adding K&W sealant is only a short temporary fix and may cause more problems by clogging up the cooling system. Ford does not recommend any sealants in the cooling system for that reason. Getting a used head will need to be check for cracks and flatness also. You do not have any idea what the junk yard vehicle went through, besides, why is it in the junk yard in the first place.

So, without taking the head gasket off or looking at the actual parts one can be pretty sure that's the problem? I'm out of work and have no money. Also, there's no smoke, or puddles under the truck. How hard is it to get the part he needs out of another Ford that perhaps got smashed in the back? What tools do you need to check the part for any deffects before buying. Or do you just buy it and then check it. He works for the Highway Dept. and has access to many "tools" . Oh and do you think that a Machinist would agree with this assessment? Thankyou!

You can have your boyfriend block test your engine. It is a test that check for combustion gasses in the cooling system caused by a blown head gasket. If your boy friend is getting a head from a junk yard, yours will have to be removed anyway, so having your checked will not hurt. Get yours tested firts before he buys a used one.

Thankyou for being so patient. It must sound horrible that I'm doubting him, but we're not on the greatest of terms and he knows I have several hardships and he wouldn't leave me in the dust. I just want him to put a lot of thought into this. He thinks he's the worlds best mechanic and wouldn't look to anyone else for answers. Not in front of me anyway.

What is the difference between a head Cylinder and a head gasket or are they the same thing.

Answer

The cylinder head gaskets seals the cylinder head to the engine. The gasket is a thin laver of matieral about a 1/16" think with metal rings to seal the cylinders. The cylinder head sits on top of the engine block that has the valves and rocker arms for the 4.0 OHV and for the 4.0 SOHC motor, it has a camshaft.
