Question

I have a 5 year old long haired chihuahua, Tobias. When he was a few months old he had a short stint of mange, but has not had a problem since. I cut him down once in a while so his hair doesn't get too long, When I shaved him 2 times ago, he had a strip down his spine that didn't grow in and still has the lines of the clippers. Is there anything I can do to make Tobias' hair grow back in that spot?

Answer

Hi Tobias Mommy,
I sometimes advise people not to shave their long haired dogs for this very reason; sometimes the hair does not grow back in some areas.

This could be caused by an internal condition, such as hypothyroidism, or another hormone imbalance called Cushing's disease. Blood tests are required to find out if he has something like this, and if he does, the hair won't grow back until the underlying condition is treated.

However, you could try giving him melatonin, from a health food store. Sometimes this will stimulate hair regrowth. You can give a small dog around 3 milligrams of melatonin daily. If you try it for a few weeks, and do not see any improvement, I would have him checked by your veterinarian. Hope this helps, Rebecca
