Question

My pug/yorkie mix had bladder stones removed in Sept 2008 and has since been on c/d formula food. I noticed her skin on her tummy, etc is turning very dark - her tongue is pink....she eats ok, is active and seems ok otherwise. Should I be concerned? I am on social security disability so I cannot afford a high vet bill but I cannot lose this precious dog either. She was born in early 2004.

Hello,
Well, the C/D diet is fine and has likely been prescribed to help acidify the urine to prevent struvite crystals/stones from forming.
By the way, if the urine has not been rechecked since starting the C/D diet, I would strongly encourage you to get a urine test performed.

Now, the dark skin. This is what we call hyperpigmentation and it is generally caused by excessive licking. Therefore, your pet likely has an underlying allergy problem.

Now, there are food allergies and environmental allergies (excluding when there are obvious flea problems).
So, you'll want to give the two links a good read before consulting your vet about the skin.

The concern with the skin changes is whether or not a secondary bacterial and/or yeast infection is present. Worth having a vet get a look.

Hope that helps
I wish the best for both you and your pet. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Dr Andy,

My pug, Peanut, is not licking herself much at all however I suspevt she may have a yeast infection. She had the yeast infection prior to discovering the stones. I will have my social security check next Wednesday - that is the earliest I can pay for a vet checkup.

My question is, will she most likely be OK until I can get her seen? Is there any treatment I can give her in over-the-counter meds or home remedies that will help in the meantime?

Your service is terrific. I will be back to your site with questions/concerns in the future.

It might be worth getting at least the exam done first so the vet can get a look at the skin, regardless if you get medications at a later date. If you have been a good client to your vet, they frequently will also delay payment for you so you can get treatment started. That would be the best way to do it. Some of these infections can quickly get exponentially worse. There also may be nothing wrong, so I don't want you to start doing OTC treatments. Get that vet exam first.
Good Luck
