Question

I have a GE XL44 gas range, model # JGBP30GEP3AD, which I purchased in 1993. It has always worked well and I have been very happy with it. But last week, out of nowhere, it started making a horrendous noise from inside the back panel. It sounds almost like a blender - definately a motor whirring very quickly. I called to have it serviced, but was told that this model had been discontinued in 2001 and that parts were no longer available. The serviceman told me that based on my description, the electronic timer had gone. I asked him to disconnect the clock as the stove and oven worked fine. However, I was told that the clock could not be disconnected from the oven controls and that there was nothing that could be done. Is this the case? Do I really have to buy a new stove just because my clock broke? Any other options?

Answer

if the timer is deffinately the part making the noise then the part really is no longer available. There may be a way to bypass the clock but because the unit is so old there are no digital records of the schematic so I wouldn't be able to tell you how without being at your house and seeing the oven's schematic. That being said I would request a different technician from the same company to come out and eleminate the timer from the circuit.
