Question

Can I use a thin set (I bought the modified stuff) on top of the glue left over from the peel and stick vinyl tiles (the floor is awfully sticky) in order to tile the floor? Will that ensure good bond? I was recommended to also butter the tiles in addition to the comb action in order to make sure I have good bond. But a contractor is telling me he needs to prep the floor by removing the glue.

Thank you for using Just Answer!

The contractor is correct in that the floor needs to be prepped. You should get as much of the glue off of the floor as possible with a scraper. The thin set needs to be able to bond with floor and not remnants of glue left over from the vinyl tiles.

It is a good idea to back butter any tile larger than 8" or any tile where 100% coverage is desired. Make sure that the thin set is prepared according to the directions on the bag so that you have the proper consistency and get the adhesion required.
