Question

We had recently taken our guinea pig to the vet on Friday in regards to a problem he was having with diarrea and an intestinal problem. We were given an antibiotic and a pain medicine along with a grainy paste to feed orally for a few days. the antibiotic for his diarrea was supposed to be given orally every 12 hours at .3ml for 7-14 days. The pain (meloxicam) said on the bottle for .08ml for 7-14 days. My boyfriend was the one who took him to the vet and took down teh instructions and didn't read the bottle correctly because he thought the meloxicam was said to give at .8ml every 12 hours for 7-14 days....well....its monday evening and the entire bottle is now gone. I only followed the instructions he had verbally and written left. I looked over teh bottle as a double check tonight and realized it is definitely off. Now my guinea pig is extremely lethargic. is he going to be ok????

Optional Information

Age: <1; Male; Breed: Guinea Pig - Black Coat

Already Tried:
Since Friday it seems as though he hasn't gone to the bathroom. I have been monitoring his water supply but have started to give him water through the cyrringe. Also, we were told that he needed more vitamin c but he won't eat teh oranges or vitamin c treats so we sqeezed the juice from an orange and have also given that to him orally as well. i am hoping by giving him the water he will start going to teh bathroom.

Cheryl, thanks for your question.

Metacam (meloxicam) is used off label for exotic pets such as guinea pigs, rats and the like. Likewise, there are always associated risks. For domestic animals, cats and dogs, renal conditions can be a concern. This can be the same for exotics. For this reason, and because of his lethargy, I would advise contacting the veterinarian that rx'd this medication and to speak with him first. If he is unavailable or the clinic is closed, seek an exam to be done by a veterinarian that feels comfortable seeing exotics. An overdose of this magnitude can be life threatening. I wish you the best of luck in getting your companion the care he needs.
