Question

I have a 1974 Pontiac formula 400. The previous owner supposedly had the TH400 tranny rebuilt shortly before selling to me & condition of exterior case seems to confirm this. It has been developing quite a "clunk" between 1st & 2nd gear after putting on about 800 miles on it. Any idea as to what the problem is & will it require R&R to repair?

Info Request

Hi and welcome to Just Answer!

How is the 1-2 shift?

At slow acceleration, the shift point occurs very early, with a clunk. With fast acceration,
it changes at a higher RPM, with a clunk. It does not do it when startup cold & starts to happen after a mile or so. Second to third shift is normal

So when the trans is cold, it works okay?

Yes, for a short period of time until , I presume, the tranny oil heats up. The modulator was checked & was O.K. Thanks for your thorough questions on this!

Accepted Answer

You are welcome! Ok. If the trans works normal when cold and starts to malfunction when warm is a positive indicator of an internal fault. Maybe a leak in the valve body or worn/damaged/misaligned components. The unit would have to be removed and disassembled for inspection by a competent trans specialist. That's the best I can tell you with the info I have or even if I could personally see the vehicle operate they way you have descibed.
