Question

#1 plug had fouled according to error code. I've replaced the plugs with platinum plus plugs as well as replacing the boots for the ignitor. I set the gap @ .060. This is for a 1996 grand am with manual trans. The engine still idles rough and the check engine light comes back on as soon as I go more than 1 mile down the road. What else could it be?

Answer

I would verify that you do have a good white-blue spark to this plug if you did not already. I would also recommend swapping the injector from this cylinder to another to see if this problem follows the injector to another cylinder. If it does, I would replace this injector. If the problem still persists on the #1 cylinder, I would recommend doing a compression test to this cylinder and two others. The compression should be within 10% of each of the other cylinders. If not, we need to look at this as a possible valve sealing issue, or a faulty compression ring. Feel free to contact me with any questions or problems!

How do I verify the spark? I can't see the plug once I replace the cover.

Answer

Well you can actually remove the coil/module assembly and insert a spark tester on that cylinder and then give the engine a crank.
