In some cases the special tools are needed, depending on the condition of the parts, like if they are seized in place due to rust/corrosion.
Most of the time, a hammer can be used to knock the tie rod ends and ball joints loose. As well, a hammer can be used to knock the axle shaft from the hub bearing, just make sure you install the nut on the shaft so you don't damage the threads. And a pry bar can be used to "pop" the axle out of the transmission.
