Question

i have a 2001 grand am and its been sitting in my driveway for a year. when i tried to jumpstart it the cables were accidently switched. before this happened my car would start up fine, but now when i try to jump start it the car turns on, but once i take the cables off, it dies down. why is this?

Answer

If it is running fine with the jumpers on and then dies or starts to die when you remove the cables the problem is most likely the alternator but I would check the fuses to see if any are blown before replacing the alternator and the battery could have been damaged also.
