Answer

Hello, Jason here to help. This Isuzu uses a plastic plenum spacer/ gasket. These will crack and allow unmetered air into the system causing misfires(rough running) when cold, and also cause the P0171 code. A smoke machine for testing vacuum leaks will find this easily. The rough running is usually worse cold, but can be constant if the vacuum leak is large enough.

This is the most common repair on these V6 trucks.

I hope this helps, Jason

Where might I get this smoke test administered?

Answer

Any reputable shop with a smoke machine can do the test. The truck will need to be cold for the best results. The machine injects a dyed, or colored smoke into the intake system and any leak will be identified by a plume or puff of smoke. Any leaks in the intake system will be found easily. The gaskets are not too expensive and can be done in a couple of hours with a few hand tools.

A smoke test of the intake should cost no more than 30 minutes labor maximum.

I hope this helps, Jason

Ok, as soon as I can have this test done, I will send another reply. It will be 2 or 3 days. Getting it done when the engine is cold will make it more difficult with the daily driving requirements to work, ect. Thanks!

Answer

If it is like every other Rodeo V6 with a po171, the cold really wont matter too much. When a engine is cold, the leak will be larger due to contraction. I have also used water in a spray bottle when idling to find intake leaks. Just spray the gasket area and listen for a change in running, or a sucking/whistling noise. DO NOT use a garden hose to do this test. A spray bottle will add just enough water to change the running of the truck.

I don't know the importance of milage in your troubleshooting, but the rodeo has 143000 miles and has never had any engine problems. This miss at idle is present even when engine is hot, but seems to fade sometimes but return randomly.

Answer

The miss pretty much goes away off idle though i'd bet. If so the intake leak is the likely culprit. Jason

Yes, miss disappears when gas pedal is depressed. Thanks, will get back to after smoke test. Thanks! Have a good night.

Answer

Not a problem, just reply if more information is needed, or click accept once the problem is confirmed as the intake. Jason

Hello, Not a problem at all. Just reply when you have the test, or repair done. Jason

Jason, I confirmed a leak somewhere, i assume intake or plenum. I was unable to get my rodeo to a repair shop that did a smoke test so I myself, after other attempts to locate an intake leak by spaying water and using propane, spayed flamable brake cleaner around the intake. I found that at the very rear of the engine, at the top where the intake is, when I spray the flamable brake cleaner, the rpms increase. What are the chances that there is a vacumm hose there, or would you say that it is the intake, or plenum?

Posted by ALLTECH 336 days and 2 hours ago.

Answer

I would bet the plenum gasket, order both gaskets though. Return the one not used. The lower is less likely to fail. jason

Jason,

I replaced the plenum gasket, which is a regular thin gasket, and I still have the miss, everything the same. The 2 lower intake gaskets are the type you thought was at the plenum. Replace the bottom gaskets now?

Accepted Answer

The lowers are the likely ones of the plenum is ok. Its a bit deeper to go to repair, but not a bad job. I am sorry for the late response. Jason

Jason,

sorry to have let you slip my mind. The day to day you know. Anyhow, turned out to be the bottom intake gasket. Thanks for your help.
