Question

I have a Mini-Split AC in my garage. Last summer a lightning strike hit very close to my house and knocked out several sensitive electronic circuits including the Mini-Split system in the garage. Although I have a complete surge protection on my house, the strike was so close I think my surge protection was inadequate to handle the energy overload. The AC was running at the time and the fan motor would still run but the remote control had no effect and there was a very shrill (I would guess 1-5 KHz) sound coming from the unit. I suspected the control PCB. I removed the board and visually inspected it. No sign of damage and the fuse had not blown. QUESTION: Do you think it is the board and , if so, how can I get it checked? Should I check some of the other electronics? And, finally, what should be my next step?

Answer

I would have everything checked by ohm meter. The compressor, and all other motors. Most likely the board could have been hit by the surge. Did you put in a insurance claim maybe this would be covered?

Rick, your reply was of no help. I should have mentioned that I am an electrical engineer and had already tried all of the routine checks - motors, fuses, compressor, etc. What I wanted was someone with experience with this actual system and had run into these symptoms before. I need to know where to get the PCB control board checked and, if bad, how to purchase a new one. Can you help with this?

Answer

I don't any body out there can test board unless you know someone with the same unit and you could swap yours to try it. But to bring it somewhere to test no way. Is yours a sanyo, panasonic ?

Mine is a Goodman. I guess I will go to their website and see if I can order a new board. Funny thing - that is where I started out and I was directed to the "justanswer.com" website. I was under the impression that you were associated with Goodman. Bad assumption, I guess. Anyway, I'll just take it from here. However, I will not be able to accept your help for payment as I am no closer to finding a solution to my problem than I was before. But, thanks for trying.
