Question

Hello. I went to the pet store to buy a rat for my snake and oops...fell in love with the darn thing. I have decided to keep her as a pet. I am calling her "Lucky". My concern is that I'm not sure she is old enough to be away from her mother. She is what the store calls a "crawler rat". Her eyes are open and she is covered in soft black and white fur. I have yet to see her eat or drink but she has only been with me for one day. How can I tell how old she is and if she is ok to be weaned from her mother? Thanks.

Hi,

Rats are generally weaned at 3 weeks-4 weeks of age. Lucky should be fine. Start feeding a Rat Lab block which is total nutrition for your growing baby. Watch out for too many treats. Rats are very social creatures and will enjoy attention from you. Make sure that she is drinking and once she settles in you can try a small treat for her and she will start to find a comfort level and eat for you. Joan
