Question

Hi-I have a sphynx kitten that I have had since november. He has been put on an antibiotic 3 times for minor sneezing. It seems to be reoccurring but never gets to bad. Only sneezing in the a.m. and occasionally during the day. The person I purchased him from said not to give him the vaccine for feline leukemia as he came from a came from a   leukemia free environment. Does this seem odd that he would keep getting this virus (what ever it is)? When he sneezes first thing in the morning generally it will be a little green and then he's done. We try and keep a t-shirt on him since he has no hair as well. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello, XXXXXXXXXX

Does he have any problems with watery eyes, runny nose, congestion?

Has your vet done any tests like a fungal culture of the nasal cavity?

He does have a very small amount of discharge from the eyes but the sphynx breed does tend to have some of that due to no eye lashes. No he hasn't done any other tests. I was going to take him back again although he isn't really ill. He plays and acts like a normal kitty. When he got on my lap this morning and did his sneeze he had a green booger (yuk). Other wise seems fine. We do have an older cat as well that is an indoor cat and has no problems. I did wonder if he could contact anything from her?

Thank you for the extra information.

To answer your question about the FeLV vaccine, that is very weird that breeder instructed you to never do it. There is no reason whats so ever why he shouldn't have one. The only reason that can possibly come to mind why the breeder said that is the cat may have been exposed already, and to get the vaccine the cat must be tested first for the virus. So in this event you would find out the breeder was a liar. I hope that isn't the case. I really do.

As for the chronic sneezing problem, I would get a fungal culture done to make sure it is isn't a fungal infection. If this is the case antibiotics will do nothing for it. Also things like polyps in the nasal cavity and even dental problems can cause it too.

The most common reason for such chronic sneezing is feline herpes virus among cats. There is no cure for it. It causes chronic nasal and respiratory problems during the life of the cat.

You can treat the symptoms of the problem with chlor-trimeton and afrin nasal spray. Chlor-trimeton is an OTC antihistamine you can find at any drug store. Just give a 1/4 tablet 1-2 times daily.

You can strengthen the immune system with L-lysine. A common immune supplement found at any vitamin store.

Sincerely, XXXXX
