Question

I have a 2006 chevy hhr , had a problem with the battery and had it replaced. Now the radio does not work , don't even light up,the signal light beeper not working and the seat belt beeper not working, I took it to the chevy dealer and they said that the radio was "fried" and the beepers work thru the radio , they qoted a price of around $600.00 to repair......the scrap yard here has the same radio ,I took it out if the car and checked the numbers on the tag and they match, for $100.The big question is does this sound right and do I need any codes to install this scrap yard radio to make it work ??????

Answer

Hello, it seems strange for the radio to be fried because of a bad battery, but if that has been verified by the dealer, replacing it with the scrapyard radio of the same part number is good solution. the catch is that the radio needs to be programmed to the vehicle with the gm scan tool and the gm web site at the dealer. ( called sps, service programming system ). they shouldnt need anything from the old radio so you could install it in the car and just have them program it. would prob only charge .5 to 1.0 labor hours to program only. ( assuming the used radio is good )

well I know what you told me already , do you know for sure that this application requires a radio code and does the the seat belt beeper and signal light beeper work thru the radio ?

Answer

yes, the seat belt beeper and the key chime work thru the radio left speaker. the radio will have to be programmed. this model doesnt have a code you can unlock with yourself like the older models

One last question, if the radio that was in the car when the battery was changed go into a lock mode cause of no battery ? and this radio does not light at all nothing,no clock no responce,IF IT WAS IN A LOCK MODE WOULD IT STILL LIGHT AND SAY LOCKED ?

Answer

even in theft mode the radio would have limited functionality and should light up and have some response of some kind. either the radio is fried or isnt receiving power/ground ( but the dealer checked that before condemning the radio )

The dealer never took the radio out,I did and found battery plus voltage with key on and off in the red wire and the ground , black wire was ground for voltage check , I found no battery voltage when you turn key on, only voltage was in the red wire at all times ,I said it must turn off a groud somewere when key is off.Does this make cents

The main radio power is supplied by a 15A RADIO fuse located in the body control module (BCM). The radio does not require a discrete ignition feed circuit for power moding. The power moding is accomplished using a structure of Virtual Networks (VN). The Power Mode Master (PMM) transmits the GMLAN power mode signals. so the serial data is what allows the radio full operation
