Question

My female 6 yr old cat (my First) is on her 7th day of zeniquin antibiotic for a uti (her First) but she is still having symptons of frequent trips to litter box with just a few dribbles. Is this unusual? Ava from North Fla.

Hello Ava,

This is Dr. Christian.

  • How is she acting otherwise- eating, drinking, active?
  • Is she on any other medications?
  • Were x-rays of her bladder done?

Hi Dr. Christian, She is active, eating and drinking but somewhat restless. She is not on any other medication. The vet did not take an x-ray nor could she get a urine sample. She gave me some crystal litter to get a sample. I haven't tried it because after a few days she got better but now she is going to the litter box freguently again with not much output of urine. Thank-you.

You are welcome. It is possible that this is not just a simple bladder infection. There may have been a secondary infection that improved initially but the underlying cause is still present. Here are some possibilities:

  • Idiopathic Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (IFLUTD) is common in cats and the cause is unknown. It occurs when the wall of the bladder becomes inflamed and painful leading to blood in the urine. There is not a medication that always works for this disease. It can be frustrating. Here's a link: http://www.petplace.com/cats/feline-idiopathic-cystitis-fic/page1.aspx
  • Crystals in the urine can develop due to infection, diet or the metabolism of the cat. They cause irritation and bleeding. Many times they can be corrected with diet.
  • Bladder stones are also common in pets and are caused by many different types of stones. Symptoms are very similar to urinary tract infection. Most stones can be seen on x-ray but a few require ultrasound to visualize. Occasionally stones also appear in the kidneys or other parts of the urinary tract. There are times when stones can be dissolved with diet but surgery is often required to remove them. The stones can then be sent for analysis to determine the cause and the best way to prevent them from returning. Usually prescription diets are the most common way to prevent return of the stones.

In this case IFLUTD is the most likely cause so I would definitely recommend saving that urine sample for your vet and call in the morning. If you have more questions please let me know.
