Question

My Maytag top loader is bumping really bad in the spin cycle. It even does it when we run a load without clothes. We have checked the levelness with a level. Any other suggestions?

Info Request

do you have a model number so I can see how this machine is designed please?

The model number is LAT6359AAE. When it starts to spin it is really bad. It seems to lighten up after it gets full speed.

ok so is the inner tub loose from the outter tub? Can you wiggle the inside tub while keeping the outertub stationary.

Yes and yes

Answer

ok so that is going to be your problem.the inside tub should not be able to wiggle, you should only be able to move the entire tub assembly. That being said you will have to call someone out to tighten the tub back down unfortunately there is a nut called a spanner nut that takes a specialty tool to tighten it down.

I'm sorry. I went off of what my husband was telling me. I just went and checked the whole tub assembly is moving. The tub itself isn't moving. Sorry for the confusion.

Answer

ok well that's better but it still means you have a problem, and if the tub assembly is ok then the glide support that the washer sits on has to be getting worn. Remove the 2 screws out of the front panel and remove the front panel. You can look at the bottom and iff you see black powder then you have a glide support that is worn out again not something you can fix without specialty tools. If you see no dust then look at the 3 springs and make sure all the springs are attached. If they all look good then your looking at replacing the inner tub (again another specialty tool, the same one to tighten the inner tub down). There is a balance ring at the top of the inner tub that is supposed to help balance the tub and it can devolope a hole it in and leak all the water out, if this happens you have to replace the entire inner tub.

Ok, I went and looked at the machine again. I don't see the 2 screws on the front panel. Do I have to pry up the top of the machine to get to those screws?

Answer

no, they are there you just aren't seeing them. They are near the bottom under the little curve of the front panel.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. We took off the front of the machine and the springs are all intact. There is a bunch of black spots everywhere. so I guess that is the dust you were referring to? Oh, my machines front panel unclips from the bottom. There aren't any screws on the front. I was going crazy looking for them. Laughing

Answer

oh I appologize, they made that style that unclips from the button for only about 6 months, I get confused myself when I see it sometimes for about 30 seconds until I realize what's going on. The black spots (if they look like oil splattering spots) is a very bad sign it means your main seal and bearing are leaking, which means that your tub isn't sealing up properly with the transmission--- not a fun or cheap fix.

Would you by chance have a rough estimate? I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer

well a seal and bearing generally runs about $350 or so to fix with parts labor and trip on these machines. The parts are about $120 or so

Thanks so much for your help. My husband thinks it is a dust substance. It looks like oil to me. But either way running it seems like I am gambling. So I guess I will have to see what happens.

Accepted Answer

alright, well if it's a dust around the center support around the middle then that would be your support glides being worn out. If you see black sploches or water splatters on the bottom and side panels then you have a bad bearing and seal.
