Question

My 2005 Seat Toledo 2.0 tdi, which i recently bought, has started to suffer from power loss when driving on motorway or dual carriageway. No warning lights come on, and its normally when I've been driving at 70mph+ for a sustained period of time, and mostly when going up a slight incline. Turning ignition off and starting car up again makes it run ok. Any idea what this could be?

Have been advised there might be carbon deposits on the turbo, as when we bought the car it hadn't been driven for a while. So have tried doing some driving at high revs in order to clear these deposits.

Accepted Answer

There may be restrictions that have developed in the catalytic converter as well, and high reving , may clear some carbon from the turbo, but wont be much help for converter. But before the the convereter is condemned, you should try to run cleaner through the intake at around 2,500 rpms, and I would suggest having the injectors cleaned as well. If you want to check for a restriction, you will need a vacuum gage, connected to manifold vacuum , with the engine idling. Note the reading at idle, snap, or open up the trottle to the max, and imediaty release. Vacuum should drop while the snap throttle is performed, but once its back at idle possition there has to be an increase in vacuum of at least 2 inches. If there is not then you have a restriction. Note the vacuum increase is only momentary, and only after the the trottle is released. Also replace the fuel filter.
