It is most likely one of the refrigerant pressure switches. Either the high pressure switch or the low pressure switch. You will probably need to have the refrigerant pressures checked and the coils cleaned if necessary.

Age has little to do with refrigerant losses. Refrigerant doesn't wear out it only leaks out. Any unit is libel to have a small leak in it. Generally speaking a compressor will short cycle for one of two reasons.
1.) It cycles on one of its safeties ( pressure switches or internal overheat protection )
2.) The thermostat.
If your room isn't at temperature you can pretty much bet that you have a safety control short cycling the compressor.
