Question

My chichuachua has been coughing all evening. It sounds like he is trying to cough something up and every once in a while he sounds like he is throwing up. Should we let him just couch up what ever is in there (i'm assuming its mucus) or do I need to get him to a vet hospital?

Info Request

Has he been around any other dogs recently? If you rub his throat, does it cause him to cough more?

Reply

we have another chichuachua and we're visiting my grandmother and she has 3 chichuachuas. rubing and petting him relaxes him and he doesn't cough as much.

Does the cough get worse when resting, or when active / playing?

Reply

When he's resting he doesn't cough at all, but when he's moving around he coughs. He hasn't been very active but he usually isn't when we're here and not at home.

OK, thanks for the info.

Is there any discharge from the nose? Does he feel hotter than usual?

Reply

very little discharge, almost none. normal temp.

Accepted Answer

Thanks. It sounds like he may have picked up an upper respiratory infection, possibly kennel cough, but it's of course a little tough to tell without examining him. The worst-case explanations would be heart disease or pneumonia, or something trapped in the airways, but I think he would be acting much worse if any of those was the problem.

I would recommend getting some medical attention soon, ideally first thing in the morning. If any symptoms get worse, or his gums become blue-ish, or pale, then you need to get him to an emergency clinic tonight!
