what might be reasons NOT to spay a 4 yr old dog? I am outraged by the new law in LA which would force responsible dog owners like myself to subject their dogs to unnecessary surgery (she is NEVER outside the house without being on a leash). I have a PhD and do research for a living so I think I can evaluate the evidence and the risks associated with the surgery and the long term consequences of the spaying are definitively NOT offset by the few potential benefits to the animal. anyway, while I'll join the fight against this stupid ordinance (note that I would be in favor of mandatory neutering for any dog EVER caught roaming the street)but in the meantime, I'll either find a vet who's willing to put it black on white that the surgery would not be ok for my dog, or I'll need to become a (fake) breeder. at any rate, I just wanted to know what might be good 'excuses' for not spaying a dog. if you happen to know of any vet who may be sympathetic to my predicament, please do let me know as well. THANKS!
Answer
Hello,
If a dog had ever reacted unfavorably to anesthesia in the past, that would be a medical reason not to spay her, or subject her to any elective surgery. A dog with any kind of bleeding disorder would be in the same position. Certain chronic illnesses - heart disease, kidney or liver problems, some autoimmune disorders - also would make surgery risky.
Research has been done that has shown female dogs who are aggressive/dominant tend to become more so after spaying. Female sex hormones tend to modify the aggressive behavior, and spayed dogs, of course, have less estrogen. Behaviorists recommend that such dominant or aggressive dogs not be spayed.
Other side effects of spaying, such as increased possibility of urinary incontinence developing, or poorer quality of fur wouldn't be considered reason enough not to spay.

Spayed dogs cannot be exhibited in AKC conformation shows. If you chose to enter your dog in some shows to prove she is a show dog, that may also be reason enough for a vet to exempt her.
