Question

After my 2003 BMW X5 sits in the garage over night, I back out then put it in drive. For about 2 to 3 seconds it doesn't want to go forward when I accelerate, so I wait for it to go forward while idling then it is okay. It works fine during the day and it shifts normally. It only happens when it is has not been driven for 12 hours or more.

This is my first attempt to get an opinion. My wife has driven it since it was new and says it has been doing this for a long time. It doesn't seem to get worse.

Greetings XXXXXXX,

My advice would be to have the fluid level checked before anything else...There are a number of things that could cause this problem ; but the simplest and least expensive is a low fluid condition...Fuid level is at its lowest after the vehicle sits for an extended period and is cold...as the car warms to operating temp the level rises to the normal level when fully hot....a low fluid condition is most evident when vehicle has been sitting overnight or for several days and would exhibit the exact symptoms that you are describing...Have the level checked and topped off when fully warmed up and hopefully that will solve your problem...I am always here if you need any more help...jeffrey590

Thanks, I will have it checked. If the low fluid rises to the normal level as it gets hot, how will you know to add fluid if it shows normal while hot. Is their a normal level while hot and normal level cold?

Accepted Answer

Yes...there are cold and hot levels....to be more specific, if level is low it will read low hot as well as cold...only difference being the higher level when hot alowws the pump more fluid as opposed to starving for fluid when cold....Thanks...jeffrey590
