Question

I HAVE A 2000 BMW 328I. AFTER I ACCELERATE AND GET TO ABOUT 30 MPH AS I LET UP ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THEN GO TO ACCELERATE AGAIN I GET A HIGH PITCHED HUM AS I ACCELERATE. IT DOES NOT LAST BUT AS I REACCELERATE I GET THE HUM AGAIN. THIS IS NOT COMING FROM THE RADIO BECAUSE IT HAPPENS WHEN THE RADIO IS OFF.

Greetings XXXXXXX,

You may have an engine vacuum leak ...When decelerating the vacuum in the engine increases and if there is a leak in a hose,fitting or a component,it will sound like a high pitched noise (kind of like air escaping from a balloon while you squeeze the opening)...When you accelerate again ,the vacuum decreases and the noise goes away...todays engines can compensate for these leaks by readjusting the fuel trim ; so the car runs fine as if there is no problem...Unless you are experienced in this type of diagnosis,I would advise having a professional perform whats called a "smoke test" on the intake system to see if you indeed have a leak...this test injects smoke into the intake system and will locate the smallest of leaks...jeffrey590
